All Sorts of EVERYTHING....

So May most years for me is just utter chaos…with school ending for myself, my kids, Spring Hockey ending, getting ready for summer guiding season, and really just all the stuff I want to do it just turns to chaos…This year I have been determined to NOT let that happen. To slow down and take time to do the stuff I really enjoy and not just cram my days full of commitments

….Take the kids fishing more instead of booking my calendar full of evening shad trips take the kids out. In the end when it is all said and done what is a few thousand dollars less in the bank to spend some river time with the kids.

…I have always wanted to go on a guided mushroom hunt. So I booked one and went with a couple buddies. It was one of the best experiences I have ever had. I imagine it is what fly fishing is like for people when they first discover it. All consuming, completely immersed in nature, with no space in your brain for interference from the outside world. PLUS my gosh are wild morels good to eat. I sautéed a few last night with butter, red wine vinegar, onion, and garlic and put it on top of a nice piece of steak and it literally changed my life.

…Hockey has been intense this spring!!! both NHL playoff hockey and my boys hockey. For the boys we are in the second round of playoffs and are up against the number one seed tonight. They have the best goalie in the league and literally could role out a team of 2 year olds and the game could end in 0-0 tie. Couple this with the Sharks game on tonight and the Sharks playoff run in general and we are ALL HOCKEY right now.

May is shapping up to be a pretty darn good month for fishing. With all the water I have been able to do some things I haven't done in years...Fish migratory Stripers out my back door, chase the flats for carp, and even get out and do some trout fishing. Lost of options.  I still have some great Summer striper and trout dates open if anyone is interested. Hope everyone is well and have a great week!

Striper Fishing - Fishing for Migratory and Resident fish has been fair to good. The Shad have shown up in big numbers on the Lower Sac this last week and that always changes things a bit but there are PLENTY of stripers to be caught. Most are in the "Schoolie" size bracket as the migratory males are thick in places and spread out in others. There are spawned out females around putting weight on and the resident fish are starting to show themselves as well.

This summer is setting up to be a pretty amazing year for stripers if you are not on the books yet I would highly recommend getting on the books in July -October this year. The migratory run of fish has been very good and moved up river far north of chico and will most likely summer over in the river with our already large population of resident fish. Mix this with plenty of water and we will have a great summer and fall season.

Lower Yuba River Trout fishing should get going in the month of June. Flows are around 7000 cfs, but ounce they get down to 3K it is going to be game on. The trout fishing on the Lower Yuba during June and July and maybe even into August is going to be really good this year.

Top Water Bass Fishing in the Back waters is picking up and with all the water this year the flats and sloughs are full! most river bass are in spawn/pre spawn phase and it is a blast targeting these fish on top during the months of May and June.

SHAD - Shad are in, and fishing has been good when you get on a school. Shoot me an email if you are looking at getting out shad fishing for an evening. Best fishing is 4pm to dark most days and last from May to Mid June.

NF Feather River - aka my favorite walk and wade trout river - Drove up hwy 70 on a mushroom hunt this weekend and the river looked gorgeous. Flows were clear but high so fishing the edges I imagine will be the game for a few weeks as snow melt moves down river.

Flats Fishing for Carp - This is the time and these type of years are the years to target true flats style fishing for carp. This is not easy, but with flooded flats and plenty of water there is a lot of opportunity this time of year.
